Step 1: Decide the Wavelength Range First
Within the near-infrared band (approximately 900-2500nm), different substances have different characteristic absorptions, and the wavelength range is the primary deciding factor in model selection.

Step 2: Decide the Optical-Path Form (Reflectance / Transmission / Fiber)
The optical-path form determines "how the sample's light is delivered into the instrument" and must match the sample form.
- Reflectance type: built-in light source; the probe is placed against the sample surface to measure. Suitable for on-site rapid detection of solids, powders, granules and tablets without sample preparation. Representative model: Reflectance NIR spectrometer NIR-R210.
- Transmission type: built-in light source and cuvette holder, suitable for absorbance measurement of liquids (beverages, pharmaceutical solutions, fermentation broths); for water-containing systems a short path length within 2 mm is recommended. Step 3: Detector and Sensitivity
The near-infrared band generally uses InGaAs detectors, which respond well to wavelengths above 900nm and offer high sensitivity. Key points when selecting:
- Whether the nominal band covers the target (determines the detector's response range);
- Whether the sensitivity / signal-to-noise ratio meets the needs of weak-signal samples (e.g. dark or low-reflectance samples);
- Whether temperature-drift compensation is needed to ensure stability during long measurements.
